Southern Cross’s King of the Cross has become Western Australia’s richest event with over $43 000 up for grabs across the 7 classes. The Quad class is named “The Quad of the Cross” and many brilliant riders have earned the title previous to this year, but with the Tri State series date clash, four of WA’s top riders were to miss this yearly event, and let what looked like a battle of the youngsters ensue. Suzuki Australia's Josh Higson a previous Aus Pro #5 was the biggest name in the program, while Coby Holland, Luke Gaisford, Colin Jefferies and Ross Varnavides looked to be some of the favourites in a field dominated by new riders.
Ross Varnavides had mechanical problems and didn’t get a start, Coby Holland showed off his new KTM, put it through its paces, winning a holeshot, taking out the first race and putting it to eventual First time Quad of the Cross winner Josh Higson.
Josh rode extremely well, never putting a wheel wrong all day, setting an amazing pace and fastest laptimes, Josh easily won the day and took home the $1500 plus holeshot monies. Adam Davies mixed it with the front runners and stood atop the podium in second place, having just stepped up from Juniors, he is definitely one to watch, while Coby Holland held out for third after the third race saw his grip come off, and him struggle with control.
Many races between evenly matched racers took place throughout the day, and while these riders didn’t get on the podium, their amazing tussles were no less exciting. Bragging rights in the pit tents, with good humoured yelling and screaming on the track all amounted to another great year at Southern Cross.
For those that didn’t make it into the highly over subscribed quad grid, The weather was brilliant, we had a full on 15 minute fireworks extravaganza on Saturday night, it wasn’t that cold, breakfast was great, and hardly any cops, so for those of you thinking about making the 400km trip, get ready for next years entry for no doubt, it will again be a race to be in the first 20 entries.
