The 2007 Smokefree WA Motocross Series has been run over 6 Rounds and 18 Races. Starting out the AJS Motorcycle Club in 38 degree temperatures in March, travelling 600kms to Kalgoorlie for Easter for round 2, Down to Bunbury for round 3, off to Coastal Park for a full Quad State Round for all classes Round 4, Round 5 back up to the hills of Gidgegannup to BSA HDMCC, then back down to the Coast in Henderson Coastal Park for Round 6.
Over 50 Senior riders have taken part in this years series, the battle for the Pro Quad title the Premier
event on the program for Quads was well represented throughout the series. WA boasts a significent amount of super fast riders, and have dominated over recent years at National level.
AUS #1 Chris Brenton won his first State title back in 2004 at 17 years of age, having won 2 National Titles in 2005 and 2006, he has packaged this year up to win by 48 points. Brenton on the TRX Honda 450ER was accompanied by Anthony Yewers on the Podium in 3rd, both racing under the HONDA SHOP banner. Yamaha rider, Ryan Lancaster would've put in more km's than anyone else doing state round this year, travelling from his home town in Tom Price 2000km's each trip.! Thats dedication for you, and to round off his year with 2 trips to Victoria and back. Lancaster won the Victorian State Title, now Brenton has the WA title, Ant Yewers said " These two guys here on the podium are the fastest two Quad riders on sand or Hard Pack in Australia" everyone of us there watching the presentation agreed, and watched the antics of the guys spray each other with the usual champagne.
Intermediate Quads was won by up and comer Taylor Milling from Kalgoorlie. Taylor has put in solid performances all year, mixing it with the Pro's and sometimes finishing above some of the pro's on the podium. Taylor will be back racing in 2008 and will surely be WA's newest Pro Quad Rider, he should be very proud of himself. Tom Stevens came in second for 2007, Michael Harcourt in 3rd.
Clubman Quads saw over 25 riders particpate throughout the series,Scott Higson, Luke Harrison and Dean Terry were the initial leadersin round 1, Daniel Udell stepped up the pace at Kalgoorlie, and put his hand up as a serious contender.
Round 3 saw young Ben Papas come from no where and win all 3 races, followed by Scott Higson and Daniel Udell. Luke Harrison was out with a broken leg and now the series was wide open. The clubmans certainly had some serious contenders this year, which had all the Pro riders track side watching.
Round 4 saw Paul Hughes step up and race with Dean Terry on the Coastal Park circuit like a pair of pro's,clearing the infield jump with ease and leaving everyone else in their wake. Daniel Udell picked up 3rd for the round.
Round 5 - Unfortunatley Dean Terry had been injured and would take no further part of the series, Luke Gaisford had turned 16 and stepped up to the Senior Ranks from the Junior Blaster Class, surprising many by taking out a hatrick of wins, Daniel Udell was hot on his tail, Ben Papas came through 3rd, leaving the Clubman Title up for grabs between himself and Daniel Udell.
Round 6 Luke Gaisford again took the 3 wins, propelling himself to Intermediates for 2008, leaving the boys to fight out the title. Daniel Udell had a first race, that I guess he would want to forget, with Papas making up 6 points on Udell, and now only 1 point behind Udell. They raced the second race as only round 6 racing should be, Papas came in 2nd and Udell 3rd, Papas was now 1 pt up for the series finale.
Race 3- it was now or never, whoever finished in front would win the Clubman Quads for 2007, Papas got the holeshot and lead the field for only 1 lap, his TRX Honda had been giving him a little grief all day, but this time, it ground to a holt, and not even Brian Williams stopping to try and help him Bump start the bike, was going to get it going, it was a devestating way to end the series. Ross Varnavides #301 finished off the series with a second place in race 3, his best of the series, followed through by Luke Harrison in 3rd. Scott Higson had sustained an injury which kept him off the podium for the series by just one race. Scott probably wouldnt like me saying he is twice as old as all these young clubmans, but he certainly puts in a huge effort at every race day, alongside his son Josh who finished the Pro Quads this year in 4th position.
Daniel Udell #47 Clubman Quad winner for 2007, Ben Papas in 2nd and Luke Harrison 3rd
All trophies will be presented at this years Gala dinner at Tomkins on Swan, overlooking the Swan River this Friday evening Oct 19th.
