It was off to Bunbury for Round Two of the 2008 Motorex WA Motocross Championship Series with Chris Brenton coming off a 1st Round win and 6 points ahead of Ryan Lancaster in 2nd place. The Bunbury track is renowned for its sand which turns to deep punishing whoops, and this weekend was not going to be any different. With only practice finished, it was evident that all the preparation and rolling done during the previous week, it was still the Bunbury track we were all used to.

With most of Australia’s top ATV riders coming from the West, it’s common place to see a line up featuring the who’s who in Australian ATV Motocross. Chris Brenton (Honda) 2 time Australian Pro Champion and current W.A. Pro Champion. Anthony Yewers (Honda) current Australian Pro and Vets Champion and No. 3 W.A. Ryan Lancaster (Yamaha) current No. 2 Australian Pro, current Victorian Pro Champion and No. 2 W.A. Add the names of Chad McKay, Josh Higson, Taylor Milling, David Sanders and you have a race even before the gates drop.

And when they did drop for moto 1, it was McKay with the holeshot. Lancaster and Yewers were in close pursuit. Brenton started poorly and was making places up after the 1st corner, one of them being McKay who bellied out in the deep sands. It wasn’t long before he passed up and coming Pro rider David Sanders and at the same time Lancaster was pulling away. Brenton rounded up team mate Yewers and was soon on the heels of Lancaster and passed him with about 2 laps to go. Brenton  had spent considerable energy in doing so, and the crowd were not surprised to see Lancaster regain the lead and hold off for the win with Brenton 2nd,  Yewers 3rd, Sanders stay in there for 4th with Milling and McKay following.

Moto 2 saw Brenton get squeezed between Yewers and Lancaster and back off to drop in behind the “Bulldozer” Yewers for the 1st corner. It paid off as Yewers shot over the inside berm forcing Lancaster over and allowing Brenton to come out in 2nd behind the holeshot winner McKay. It was obvious Brenton had some harsh words to himself after moto 1 as he passed McKay with ease and headed off into the sun set for a comfortable win. The crowd pleasing racing was between 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Mckay had a small lead over Yewers who in turn was making himself too wide for Lancaster to pass. McKay had a flat rear which allowed the others to catch up but he wasn’t about to give up 2nd. With just over a lap to go, Lancaster passed Yewers and put a move on McKay that saw the two come together and let Yewers take 2nd with Lancaster getting going and taking 3rd. Once again Sanders proved himself with yet another 4th. For an exceptional race effort by McKay, it was disappointing to see him finish 5th ahead of Higson and first year senior (Intermediate) rider, Luke Gaisford who came in 7th. Well done!

As is usual with this class, it was all down to the last moto between Lancaster and Brenton. Winning this moto meant winning the day! Lancaster was there to do the business and pulled the holeshot followed by Mckay, Yewers, Brenton and Sanders. Not wanting to let Lancaster have it all his way, Brenton passed Yewers with ease and went looking for the pack. As they disappeared out the back section of the track it was Lancaster, McKay, Brenton and Yewers. Seconds later they re-appeared Brenton, McKay, Yewers and Lancaster. With lap times more than 15 seconds slower than in moto 1, Brenton stayed in the lead to take the win and the day. Lancaster fought his way back to 2nd and McKay finally getting some luck on his side with a 3rd. Yewers held on for 4th, and I’m sure he will be very careful with his diet leading up to the 3rd State Round. He had lost 10kgs in three weeks and paid heavily for it with his stamina and energy levels. Sanders rounded of his day with a 5th, which he should be proud of as with both Gaisford (6th) and Luke Harrison (Intermediate) finishing 7th.

Milling started the day well with a 5th in moto 1 but with suffering a back injury from a huge off in Round 1, finished moto 2 and DNS moto 3. McKay had bad luck from moto 1, but didn’t give in and finished strong in the final moto. Gaisford and Harrison both did well running as Intermediates along side the Pros. Daniel Wilkinson also made the journey from Tom Price and learnt first hand what Brenton, McKay and Lancaster already had as they have all come from the country. Sand tracks are HARD!

In five weeks, the Southern Capes MCC will hold the 3rd Round of the 2008 Motorex WA Motocross Championships at the very fast Jingdong track. Will this even things up? You need to be there to see!
