WA State Round Kalgoorlie April 8th 2007
Goldfields Motorcycle Club hosted Round 2 of the WA State Motocross Championships on April 8th. From all reports the racing in the Pro/Inter Quad class was spectacular and worth the 1200km round trip to be a spectator !
Inside information had us wondering whether Aus #1 Chris Brenton riding for Honda Australia would make Round 2, as he wasnt running at 100% after a pre season training accident. I can tell you now, if thats not 100%, then the rest o the field are all going to have to find 6th gear to catch him. Brenton scored a hatrick of wins for the day, challenged only by previous state champion Glen Ashworth. Ashworth was quoted as saying, "I finally passed him and passed me right back !" Race 1 was a spectators delight with Quads flipping through the air all over the track, the ones who cleared the first corner were met with a wall of dust and crunching bikes and riders, Graham Terry stopped and made sure everyone was OK and found the race was still running and had to play catch up. The tenacity of this class is far exceeding every other year of racing with positions changing throughout each lap right to the finish line.
Darren Williams said "From what I’ve seen there were riders that improved last year and just got better and better and faster & faster, but On Sunday @ Kal some of these riders were getting past like they were standing still.
Maybe it was the hard pack
Maybe track familiarization
think the pro’s are now officially going-off
Bunbury’s gunna be huge, real important points"
Intermediates are still run within the 20 Grid Pro Class but scored seperately. These guys are keeping the pro's honest with none of them wanting to be behind an intermediate and in so are being pushed to their limit. Dave Sanders from Esperance caught our eye up in Kalgoorlie for the Golden Wheel Last October. This guy is fast, would like to see if he can put it all together in the remaining rounds. Coby Holland had a nasty off and couldnt complete the Day. Tom used a bag of different bikes to complete the round, with the TRX detonating after the first race, It is always great to see that people with a second bike are so willing to loan to other quad riders to keep them racing. "Tom finally rev’d the life out of his Honda and then borrowed a Udels YFZ for moto 2 and @ spare 22 Honda for moto 3" said Darren Williams
Clubman class was a little down on numbers this round with only 10 riders making the trek to Kalgoorlie. Local rider Dean Terry was showing fine form with 2 wins from 3 starts, battling it out for podium finishes this round were youngsters Luke Harrison,Ben Papas and Daniel Udell.
The next round is a little closer to home with the second of the Country rounds for the series.
Points are close in all classes and every position will make a difference come the end of the season.
Round 3 at Shrublands Park Bunbury will be on May 13th
Closing date for entries is April 27th
