2009 KTM
WA State Quad Motocross Championships
July 4th and 5th will see the WA Motocross Championships head to the heart of the tourist mecca of the South West “Busselton”. Southern Capes Motorcycle Club will host a double header split round with the Quad State Championship featuring the Womens State Championship on Saturday, backing it up with the WA State MX Championships on Sunday. A huge program is scheduled across the weekend with over 60 races to be completed. GWN TV advertising across the regional areas surrounding Jindong attract extreme motorsports spectator crowds out to see some thrills and spills.
Junior 90cc-110cc started the series with 14 entries, although we see only 10 or so for round 3, the racing will be no less competitive, with Aus #1 Chris Bosnakis leading the charge with 7 straight wins to his credit and holding a 33 point lead over Maverick Cuthbert on 142pts and Aston Oliver on 132 pts in 3rd. These 3 boys are undeniably the future generation of the blaster class and it will be interesting to see how their move to the larger cc machine pays off in the future.
Junior Quads in WA field the largest grids of 200cc-300cc riders in the country. The top 5 2010 WA seeded numbers are on the line, and the plates are more of a priority than the trophies. Marcus Smith sits on top of the leader board with 2 rounds complete on 144pts, Jordan Dummett on 137pts is second and Adam Davies 135pts 3rd. A Full grid is listed to race with reserves, the omission of young Don Petersen who sustained a nasty injury just two weeks ago, and National Champ, Kalgoorlie boy Stephen Wilson was a blow to the Championship, but don’t think the top 3 will be fighting it out amongst themselves when Adam Larson(Aus #2) comes to town. The equivalent of a Junior Lites class for Quads, the racing is amazing and will have the pits emptied as everyone lines the fence for this one !
The advancement of Junior 200cc riders is to Clubman Quads, and currently 2 of the 3 riders sitting in the top 3 were racing blasters in 2008. Brad Filbey holds the top position on 179pts, Mitchel Clarke 175pts in 2nd and Kyle Brenton rounds out the top 3 on 168pts.
Advancing to the 450’s is a little harder than some give due credit and a year in Clubman is certainly a good learning curve, 2010 will see 10 of the current Juniors advance to Clubman next season for what is looking like a massive class of very good riders.
While sticking with the Junior theme, some riders have moved through to Intermediates the likes of Daniel and Tom Udell came from the Junior Class are sitting 2nd and 6th, watch out for these two at Jindong as this is their home track. Ross Varnavides holds 1st place after 3 rounds and Rick Stephens is sitting in 3rd.
Three Australian Junior Quad Champions ’05 Josh Higson(WA), ’06 Luke Gaisford(WA),’07 Mitch Van Vliet (Vic) for the first time will go head to head as Seniors at Round 4 of the WA State Quad MX Championships. All now graded nationally as Pro Quad Riders, will be racing against Australian Pro Quad Title holders from ‘05’06 Chris Brenton, ’07 Anthony Yewers, ’08 Ryan Lancaster. With the only big gun of Chad Mckay missing due to injury, at this stage, this grid along with Taylor Milling Aus #6, Glen Ashworth, Coby Holland and Tom Stevens will be the largest Pro Quad grid fielded so far in 2009 and can truly be labelled as one of Australia’s most prestigious . Racing at one of WA’s Premier Quad Tracks Jindong Park, competition will definitely be fierce and who ever takes top honours on the day will have to earn it.
Current leader Ant Yewers holds a slim lead for the series 16pts in front of youngster Luke Gaisford, while Glen Ashworth holds 3rd place.
Veteran Quads fields a healthy grid of 11 riders including Previous Australian Vet Champions Scott Higson and Grant Gaisford, the current group of vets almost all race in the current state round series in their graded class, so race fitness wont be a problem for these guys ! Quite a few of these riders are parents to younger seniors and Juniors show-casing the family content of Quad Racing in WA.
Women’s Quads has 9 Girls taking to the grid for a 3 Race State Title. The 2008 winner Roxanne Petersen will be unavailable to defend her title, Jessica Osborne who finished equal 3rd in the 2008 Womens Nationals looks to be the favourite, while Daneil Smith travelling down from the North West & Jodie Guest will throw out a new challenge to the current group of racers competing in the clubmans state round series. The competition for Automasters Holeshots will no doubt bring some thrills to the starts, but the finish line will be anybodies guess !
Come along and support your favourite riders, or be thrilled by the Pro’s who will all be out in force and will feature on the day in the first and Last races 15mins + 1 lap, and also in the middle of the second round with a 6 lap sprint.
