Southern Capes Oct 12th 2008
Leading up to the Australian Championships in Smithton, the Southern Capes "MX Challenge" was the last chance for the Pro's to get some much needed practice on a hard pack track. A few hours south of the metro area, saw a grid of 16 Quad riders front up for most of their last race meet of the season. The Junior Blasters had competed on the Saturday for their first trek to Jindong setting a cracking pace, with everyone checking out the youngsters fastest laptimes.
Chris Brenton's day did'nt go as expected, mechanical problems putting him on the sideline from the get go. Chad Mckay lead the field in the first race, with Luke Gaisford making his way through the traffic to come through for second with Luke Harrison 3rd.
Race 2 saw Luke Gaisford take the Can-Am to holeshot holding Mckay out of the lead for 3 laps, a fantastic pass relegating the youngster back to second, with Luke Harrison again taking 3rd.
Race 3 Gaisford stalled on the start, the grid had dwindled to just 10 riders, with Mckay leading from start to finish, Gaisford put the hammer down and passed all but two riders in the first lap, and on lap 2 pulled the fastest lap of the race to get up into 2nd in pursuit of McKay. Tom Stevens came through in 3rd 33 seconds behind the leaders.
Having nominated for Pro class in the Nationals, Luke could'nt have wished for a better event to finish the WA Race Season and look forward to the trek to Tasmania. He had made up an incredible 7 seconds a lap over the year, to put some of the WA Pro's in reach, and was really looking forward to see where he sat compared to the likes of Beechey, Smith, Ovens and Co.
