Rockingham Powersports MX riders competed in Round 5 of the WA Motocross Championships yesterday at the BSA club at Noble Falls. Having encountered extremely muddy conditions in the last two rounds, the weather had become a major factor this season. The circuit was prepped beautifully, the track immaculate, fast, a little slippery, and as the day went on, dust not mud would become a determining factor.
Luke Gaisford on board the RPM Can-Am DS450 added another hatrick of wins to his season. The first race saw Gaisford out in front of the intermediates, and attached to the Pro group, challenging Taylor Milling for position all over the track. Race 2 had Luke battling it out with Luke Harrison, the 2 putting on some great manoeuvres on each other, passing each other through corners, then passing back exiting corners, unfortunately Harrison pushed into a corner a little tight and tipped the quad over. Race 3 Gaisford got a less than pretty start, with the whole field in front of him, the task at hand was now to get through the traffic to maintain his top Intermediate position, he caught and passed all in his class, with 3 laps to go Luke had Anthony Yewers (Aus #1) in his sites, the gap closed at the tight top sections of the track, with Yewers putting in some bike lengths on the straights, every corner saw Gaisford and Yewers banging bars, after 8 laps it came down to a drag race up hill to the finish line with Yewers holding on by the slimmest of margins.
Gaisford’s laptimes on the Can-Am DS450 were an incredible 12 seconds faster per lap than just 1 year ago when he entered the senior ranks.
Grant Gaisford on board the Honda TRX450ER, racing in the Quad Veterans had to contend with 3 different classes on the same grid, Vets, Women’s and Clubman. A group like this mixes so many skill levels of riders and with just 4 short laps a good start is needed. Experiencing a bit of wheel spin on the slippery start grid, Gaisford had his work cut out, passing many riders every race.
Grant has maintained his good position of second overall with another silver medal for his efforts on the day.
The finale of the State Championship series finale on September 7th at Coastal Park in Henderson.
