Coastal Quad Club Day May 21st 2006
Its been a long time since the last Quad Day at a MWA Affiliated Club, Looking back to 2001 it was Chad Peters and Brett Petricevich who first got a run happening at AJS. Senior Quads have successfully been racing there producing some of Australias Best riders ever since.
This year has seen a huge influx of Quad riders join Coastal and AJS, with numbers increasing up at Kalgoorlie and steady turn outs at Northam. Because of this, it prompted us to organise a quad only day at Coastal Park which isn’t the easiest track to negotiate for Motocross novices, but great to have the opportunity to have a go, and to see the pro riders at this track in full flight is just spectacular.
Friday and Saturday saw Coastal Parks track prepared beautifully and we knew the weather was heading for 27, everything was ready, except the race day being a small interclub, entries weren’t required and we would wait til after scrutineering before we would know how many people were ready to race.
By 7.30am the gates were open and cars and trailer loads of quads were pouring into the pits with a line up to scrutineering that was picture perfect !
Practice got under way with a minimum of fuss, including 6 classes and over 50 riders. The Junior 90cc Class is peppered with talent and has everyone guessing what brand of quads the kids are racing, and in awe of the speed some of the kids are doing around the track, Young Chris Bosnakis pulled off four wins, Aston, Daniel and Donovan taking the minor placings each race. New racer Maverick joined the club this week and was out on the 2006 Honda TRX having a ball, Kane decided if there was no solo racing he may as well jump on a quad and join in too.
The Blaster class was missing a few riders this event, and all present decided it was time for new people on the Podium. Luke was having none of that, Joel holeshotting 2 of the 4 races made Luke work for his 4 wins, Joel, David and Jessica were certainly on the noise every race all day keeping the points tight until the end. Manjimup rider Tom Udell made the trek up for the event and showed how fast he could take that 200cc Yamaha, kill switch had a few other ideas and stopped him from completing some races.
Six Ladies graced the starting grid, Cathy Bush having completed a full year in Clubman State Round was unbeatable, Monique on the Kawasaki put in a huge effort to finish consistently second. Katy, Bron, Amy and Jen tussled it all day, the competitiveness showing on the first corner with plenty of pushing and shoving. Was truly great to see all the girls get out there and put on a good show.
It was decided to put the senior male one day licence holders in their own class, no intimidation by the huge class of clubmans now competing. Rolly was outclassing everyone on the Team ANT Honda, Lyndsay held on for second and the two Dads of the Jefferies/Bellman clan finished the day on equal points. Its never too late to have a go !
18 Clubman racers pulled up to the grid and I bet I wasn’t the only one to hold my breath when they went through corners 1 & 2, but there wasn’t one mishap all day, some fantastic racing between Tom Stevens and stunt bunny Bradd Jefferies who saved what looked like to be the biggest crash of the day, glad to see Bradd ride back and finish the race having not even come off the bike. Matty Norman pulled up for third place, in his first year of racing he will be the one to watch come Bunbury State Round on June 11th. Consistency pays off to come top 5 with Michael Harcourt beating solo racer Scott Petricevich on another Team ANT Honda.
The Pro Field for this event was just amazing, fielding three National Champions, one state champion including all WA’s 3 top five national Pro Class finishers, we all knew this was going to be fast, but still it blew everyone away at the speed these guys raced the 3 lap sprints, amazingly 5 guys cleared the infield tabletop all at once and it gave me goosebumps, someone surely must of taken a photo or video of that! Chris Brenton pulled out 4 wins with Ant, Colin and Chad scoring seconds and thirds. Brett Yewers advancing from Clubmans back to Pro’s for 2006 was up the pointy end of the field with Grant and Brett fighting it out for the minor placings. Michael rounded out the field with Scott Jones who had made the trip from Port Hedland . Gavin Horne looked to be taking the day as a fitness run for his impending trip to compete at the Finke early in June. We wish all travelling to the Finke the best of luck !
