Australian Quad Motocross Championships
Murray Bridge South Australia
Sept 18th 19th 2009
Murray Bridge being central to most riders attracted huge numbers in all classes, the Women’s had 19 entries and hence the best field ever assembled for Women’s quads to date in Australia.
Grid capacity for Quads is 20 and up until this year, the Nationals have only fielded half a grid of Women Open Class to compete at the different states holding the Annual National titles.
Patricia Bartley was the odds on favorite to take the title but an unfortunate injury to her knee in practice had her sitting on the sideline for the weekend watching the rest of the field battle out the ‘09 title without her.
Event coordinator and Iron Woman Donna Newman(SA) competing in also the Veterans 35+ class was now the hot favorite with Jeanette Lindsay(Vic #1) a previous National title holder also in the running. Little known West Australian Teniel Morgan was the surprise package, but after Race 1 finishing second to Newman, and transponders showing who was up their in lap times, Morgan was going to be a force to be reckoned with. Race 1 also saw 16year old Simone Gaisford(WA #2) finish in front of Lindsay for 3rd place and WA #1 Jessica Osborne come through for 5th.
Race 2 saw Newman again with the lead, fastest laptime and the win, Morgan took an easy second with Lindsay following through in 3rd. Sandra Harris(SA) put in her best race 4th with Bernice Ackermann(WA) in 5th.
Race 3 was held on Sunday morning, Jeanette Lindsay seemed to have made the adjustments required to get her further up the podium into second just a bike length behind Newman with her now hatrick of wins. Taneil Morgan came through for third ahead of Gaisford 4th and Harris 5th .
Race 4 The two West Australians got a pearler of a start and took the top two positions for the entirety of the race, Morgan finished in 1st place with a 6 second lead in front of Gaisford in second who was jostled for position at the high end of the course by Lindsay, but couldn’t pull off the pass settling for third with Newman relegated back to fourth place, with Ackermann again in 5th.
Race 5 the finale to the series saw Morgan again pull a good lead and hold 1st place for the entire race, putting in her best chance to steal the title away, as Lindsay and Newman battled it out all over the track, it was Newman less than a second across the line in front of Lindsay to claim victory and the Aus #1 plate, Teneil Morgan finished 1 point behind over the 5 race weekend to take Aus #2 Jeanette Lindsay Aus #3 Simone Gaisford Aus #4 Bernice Ackermann Aus #5
Women’s Quad MX Racing has advanced over the years with Juniors moving through to the senior ranks, Seniors receiving advanced coaching, and social riders moving into the competitive racing circuit. To see 19 Women on the line was awe inspiring to everyone on the grid, their supporters & sponsors and also to the Junior Girls who were also given their own grid at the Championships for 12 yrs to Under 16yrs Girls 200- 300cc
The Junior Girls were dominated by Melissa Davies who consistently places well against the boys on a full grid in WA, Brooke McKay(WA) took out 2nd position in every race, while 3rd place’s was shared over the weekend amongst Sarah Moore(WA), Shannon Clinton(WA), Jemma Merrylees(WA) and Chloe Beer(Vic). Overall Beer took the 3rd place, while only a point separated 4th Jemma Merrylees who was tied with 5th Shannon Clinton and 6th Sarah Moore, Demika Anderson 7th and Courtney Donoghue 8th rounded out the grid.
