State Round 5 AJS Motorcycle Club Wanneroo
State Round 5 AJS MCC
Sept 17th 2006
The hours drive to AJS had us up and on the road at 6am, a few showers of rain broke into beautiful clear skies that would last all day and leave me with a racoon look suntan !
State Round is run under a tight schedule and it’s a brilliant site to see all classes of quads sitting on the start line to be sent out in groups for practice.
Coby Holland from Esperance caught our eye with everyone asking who is #38? Wow he was doing all right!.
With the formalities done, the pro’s lined up for the first time in 2 years without Chris Brenton, something certainly felt missing with the Brenton’s tent not in the pits. Never the less, Chris was there to support Graham Terry, and parts of his Honda seemed to be in everyone elses Quads!
It was obvious to everyone that this round was the one to make up ground on the points table, and with no one letting off into to the first corner, a flip and spin out by two of the riders saw the dust settle and Glen Ashworth determined to finish in the top 3, he made short work of getting into 4th position and in lap 5 after a fierce battle with Colin Jefferies moved into the 3rd place. Meanwhile Anthony Yewers and Graham Terry where battling it out for top honours with Ant punching the air over the finish line.
Brad Jefferies took outright 5th with a huge ride, that he should certainly be very proud of.
Race two of the Pro/Inter class saw Glenn Ashworth of old streaking out to an unbeatable lead, leaving Ant in his wake, Colin Jefferies was having a fierce battle with GT finally passing him in Lap 3 and taking out 3rd place.
Race 3 was going to decide who was sitting where on the points table and it was disappointing after two DNF’s to see Chad Mckay not take to the start Grid. Yewers, Ashworth and Terry went into the first corner 3 abreast, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one holding my breath, somehow the whole crew got over the first jump safely and on their 10min +1 lap journey. Ashworth got the jump on Yewers and held the lead for one lap, but right in the first corner bend He went wide and rode the berm, leaving the door wide open for Yewers to pass, I’m certain I heard him yell “thankyou very much”
Glenn held on for second with Terry pulling in an easy 3rd.
Round 5 Points
Anthony Yewers 72
Glen Ashworth 67
Graham Terry 60
The final points tally after Rnd 5
Anthony Yewers on 280 Graham Terry on 280 Chris Brenton on 258pts.
Round 6 at Coastal Park on Oct 17th will be an absolute pearler.
Clubmans saw a full grid listed to race, but with a few injuries keeping riders away, race 1 saw 17 Quads on the grid, Luke Harrison at his first state round race pulled Holeshot and finished the race with a credible 5th Clint Hill 1st Corey Stratton 2nd and Matt Norman 3rd.
Race 2 saw the two newcomers Luke and Coby tangle on the first corner, but Coby took off on a mission weaving his way through the field to come in 4th place. Clint Hill came in 1st Corey Stratton 2nd with Michael Harcourt 3rd.
Race 3 saw the field dwindle down to 12, Team “Stratton” at the top of the pits collectively shook their heads to see young Corey ride off the side of the berm on the step-up, the only way off was down the side and upside down. He scrambled off and chased the field down passing 7 riders to come in 5th and keep hold of a slim 1 Point lead for the Series over Clint Hill who took a hat trick of wins today. Race 3 saw Matt Norman with the second and Michael Harcourt in 3rd.
