State Round 1 for 2008 was held at AJS MCC,notorious for its jumps, Quarry and sand surface and was the site of the 2006 Quad Nationals. Some were stating yesterday, the track surface through intermittant light rain showers was as rough as it had ever been seen. "Anyone who enjoyed racing there yesterday is crazy" a random rider was heard saying. Yesterday certainly bought the goosebumps out, My son Luke at 16 now racing in Intermediates, lined up with the Pro Quad grid. Surrounded by Yewers, Brenton, Lancaster, Mckay, Higson and co, I thought wow, who wouldnt pay money to see the talent on this grid race.
Luke was still riding his Can-Am in stock form and most of the grid knew it. Lovely of Ryan to wish him luck and Chris and Josh checking to see how he did, these guys are all great, Coby giving Luke the thumbs up after the finish line as they had battled it out all over the track switching positions frequently.
Chad McKay showed his maturity after a horrific crash into the Quarry that would see alot of riders pack up and go home, Chad got himself dusted off and back into the race, only to come unstuck again at the other end of the track and finally pull in, getting a dnf against his name for the first race of the season.
Taylor Milling got the scare of his life, while going over Joondalup jump when his grip came off in his hand, out of control, Taylor dismounted his ride before it went into a barrel role, that had riders behind him making sure he got up!, his bike was unrideable and Taylor settled for a dnf as well. Action was a plenty with Chris Brenton and Anthony Yewers coming together in Race 3, both ending up upside down, with a full grid of riders becoming a parking lot waiting for the bikes and debris to clear. This is the part of racing many come to see, Brenton in last with 5 laps to pass everyone, its exciting and everyone just knows he can do it, but with the track like this, would he be able to? He passed 6 riders the first lap and made his way up to 3rd but this race was down to only 5 laps as the riders were at 2mins 30 + per lap. Brenton settled for 3rd and the Round 1 Win, sitting just 6 points in front of Ryan Lancaster and 18 points in front of David Sanders.

This year, the addition of a Vets classed has been warmly accepted by those riders over 35, 8 entries with some riders unable to make it for the first round is a good start, Having two ex pro riders amongst the Club/Vet grid has made the leading clubman work for their positions and same great racing was seen between the leaders of both classes. Grant Gaisford was eager to see 4 lap races! while Brett Petricevich has made a welcome return to racing, newcomer Vince Tomson stepped it up with Steve Trandos and Ricky Stephens. Younger brother of Intermediate rider Daniel Udell, Tom is making a mark in the Clubmans with a hatrick of 3rd places.
Jessica Osborne and Jessica Harrison certainly need credit where credit is due, racing in those conditions, girls you certainly did everyone proud.
Round 2 is set for Shrublands Park in Bunbury on May 11th, historically this race day attracts huge crowds, so make your way down to Bunbury and check out the action.
