Tri State Round 2 Murray Bridge 17th May 2009
7:00am Sunday morning at Murray Bridge Motocross Track there was distinct odour in the air from the near-by mushroom and chicken farm. Trying to knock in a tent peg was near impossible on the slope due to cap rock. Neither of these things bothered any rider or spectator as this would be one of the best venues for spectators to watch a race as the entire track is visible, and what the riders saw in front of them was a well groomed and prepared track. This was going to be the beginning of a great days racing.
With 2 junior and 4 senior riders from W.A. attending this meeting, we were in for some action on the track.
Jordan Dummett had a bike failure in the 1st moto which meant a long trip with little practice for the Nationals at this track later in the year. Brayden Spencer did all 3 motos and finished consistently 5th each race giving him an overall 5th place. Chris Brenton mentioned to Brayden that with a little more hard pack training, he should fare well at the nationals.
W.A. have been setting the benchmark for sometime in the Pros, and this weekend was no different. Chris Brenton came out of the block firing on all cylinders getting all 3 hole shots and led from start to finish to claim 3 wins. Only in the 3rd moto did he receive some pressure from Chad McKay who was right on his tail for the first 10 minutes, but eventually dropping off and giving Brenton a 5 to 8 second buffer. Ryan Lancaster and McKay had a real battle in the first and second motos with Lancaster getting 2nd on both occasions. McKay was running 2nd in moto 1, but after loosing his seat, it became too much of a struggle with Lancaster passing him through the rhythm section mid race and McKay unable to stay with him. The 2nd moto saw McKay really applying pressure to Lancaster and managed to get passed only to have Lancaster pass back on the next corner. Call him what you want, Man Mountain, The Tank or whatever, but Ant Yewers, at the ripe old age of ##, is still one of Australia’s best riders. Yewers was out of his comfort zone on Murray Bridge’s fast track, and couldn’t stay with W.A’s. youth, yet he ran 4th all day long with plenty of track space back to 5th. The Man just doesn’t give up.
Production was the only other class W.A. had an entrant. With Chris Brenton on the same bike he raced in the Pro class, it was a no brainer who would win this event, although we did see him with a dns at round 1 due to some human error. History didn’t repeat itself and Brenton comfortably won all 3 motos.
At the end of the day, it was good to see both juniors and seniors travel to Murray Bridge and achieve some good results.
