Southern Cross 2006
Southern Cross is approx 450kms from Rockingham and attracts Quad riders from all over the state, in the case of Solo's it attracts riders from all over Australia and in its hey day was visited by riders from Overseas.
This years event broke all records with the largest number of entries ever. The pits were extended and the 6am start was certainly needed to get the event finished by dark!
The Quad riders Class had a distinct country feel to it with riders travelling from Newman, Esperance, Kalgoorlie and of course Perth, fielding only one grid, 19 riders were lucky enough to have their entries accepted.
There were quite a few new faces racing in Southern Cross, including the Lawrence Brothers, also from Esperance Father and son team of Scott and Josh Higson, Josh having come up from the Junior Blaster class where he won the National Title in Victoria in 2005. Riding the Yamaha Banshee he was certainly one to watch as he ringed the neck out of that machine to come in top 5 placings.
Dee and Woody travelled from Newman and we had the pleasure of being pitted between them and the Stevens/Jefferies clan making for a nice social day. Will be interesting to see how Dee goes at the forthcoming Quad Championships in the Ladies class.
Dean Terry was back from injury and putting the Suzuki through its paces, along with Scott Higson and Scott Lawrence, put a distinct Yellow Suzuki Feel on the grid.
Chris Brenton had flown in from his trip to the US, and driven straight up to SX for this yearly event he was awarded with overall 1st place and from where I stood looked to have taken race 1 and 3 for Holeshot!
Race two holeshot was won by Glenn Ashworth on board the ALYZ Engineering YFZ450 Yamaha, Glenn is a previous 3 times WA State Champion and certainly has found form this season pushing the younger guys and making them work for every podium finish. After the first two races, Glenn still had the fastest lap time of the day.
