King of the Cross
25th Anniversary
Ritchie Kings Memorial Park
Southern Cross
8th August 2010
Australia's richest event attracted the best riders from all over the country including for the Solo's Jay and Ryan Marmont, Craig Anderson, Michael Addison, Kim Ashcanazi and a host of other stars, all vying for part of the $45 000 prize pool, but hey we are a quad website and although we love watching all the racing, especially seeing Addo dominate the finale, we will concentrate only on the Quads.
Almost a full grid of riders turned out to compete in the 25th anniversary run of the Quad of the Cross, previously won by standout riders, Glen Ashworth, Kevin Fanning, Chris Brenton and 2009 winner Josh Higson.
Each and every year it is a lottery to see if your entry is early enough to be excepted and this years turnout saw a mixture of Pro's, Intermediates, Clubman, Vets and women all on the line to take part in this prestigious event.
Noteable mention would have to go to the current Junior WA #1 rider Marcus Smith, although leading the series with one round to go to defend his title, stepped up into seniors and by the smiles on his face after each race, and his brilliant results, I am sure he has made a great decision to join the senior ranks, 1 point off the podium, what a great start to his senior career!
Six veterans competed and put in great races between them, many of them Dad's of their sons also on the track.
Josh Higson was back to defend his title, and had a brilliant battle all day with winner and Quad of the Cross title holder 2010- Luke Gaisford.
Gaisford and Higson like their Dad's have had a long time rivalry since 2005 in Juniors, and their competitiveness with each other keeps breaking new ground for the pair to push each other to new heights. The first 2 races were both separated by the slimmest of margins and both riders dominated the days racing. Higson messed up the first corner in the last race and came from almost dead last, through the field to take second through a bunch of riders over the finish jump.
Ross Varnavides and Adam Davies both finished well in race 1 & 2 to put them equal on points going into race 3, Davies capitalised on the opportunities and took the podium for the second year in a row.
1st Luke Gaisford
2nd Josh Higson
3rd Adam Davies
Junior 200- 300cc Quads 12 - U16yrs competed on Saturday in the Kid of the Cross Anniversary event. Stiff competition all day between the rising stars of Junior Quads saw Don Petersen take the overall win with Josh McKay a close 2nd Anthony Pearce 3rd
