The WA State Motocross Championships Round 1 was held on April 26th, with 300 riders including 40 Quads representing Pro/Intermediate and Clubman Classes.
The Coastal Park Club is home to over 50 Quad Riders with a 10 year history of quad members and increasing yearly.
Many classes including the Quads had a list of reserves, with good indication Motocross was ticking along nicely in WA. Along with solo’s, who have always had the influx of Juniors populating their senior clubman grids, the Quads now also have a steady stream of Juniors advancing to seniors with great racing skills.
The Clubman Grid was packed with talent and the competition at the front was between youngsters Kyle Brenton, Brad Filbey and Mitch Clarke while the usual pecking order mismatch was evident as all the riders flew into the first few corners, with crash’s tangles and some near misses occurring. As usual the day sorted itself out and the riders showed off their speed and skill, to the delight of the many spectators who came to watch them.
Kyle Brenton opened up his senior racing account, in the first race he gained a commanding lead in front of the 20 strong field, while young Brad Filbey played catch up, catching Brenton in the final corner and making the pass over the final jump to claim the Chequers. Kyle Brenton 2nd Adam Nagle 3rd
Race 2 again saw Brenton take the lead with Filbey on his back wheels, a smooth pass before the bridge saw Filbey take 2/2 with Mitch Clarke 2nd and Kyle Brenton 3rd
Race 3 Mitch Clarke took off and raced to an early lead with Filbey and Brenton in tow, the second lap, while jumping together, Clarke and Filbey collided and while the crowd watched in horror as the 2 Quads couldn’t be separated, and were pushed off the track, giving both riders zero points in the finale. Kyle Brenton raced away to a good lead but a mechanical problem in the last corner saw Adam Nagle slip through for the win, Sam Derbyshire 2nd, with Brenton holding on for 3rd.
Intermediate Quads had a healthy grid of 9 riders, as expected Ross Varnavides, Steve Trandos and Rick Stephens were the standouts, although the change from Clubman to racing alongside the Pro’s was a new experience and the 6/7 lap races a shock for some, providing the difference between 1st and 9th. Daniel Udell took a podium in the first race, also showing off some amazing form.
Race 1 1st Steve Trandos, 2nd Daniel Udell, 3rd Rick Stephens
Race 2 1st Ross Varnavides 2nd Steve Trandos 3rd Rick Stephens
Race 3 1st Ross Varnavides 2nd Rick Stephens 3rd Steve Trandos
Overall 1st Steve Trandos(67pts), 2nd Ross Varnavides(62pts), 3rd Rick Stephens(62pts)
Pro Quads were missing Stars Aus #1 Ryan Lancaster and Aus #2 Chris Brenton, but never the less the field was strong and it was truly amazing to see that full grid roar up the long start straight and into the first corner.
Race 1 The first corner was pretty clean, but the second saw Garry Stacey hit the ground, with Chad McKay taking evasive action to miss Stacey, he then collided with riders and created a road block of about 8 Quads, Mckay had his work cut out, as the leaders were now 40 seconds up on him. Glenn Ashworth and Intermediate Ross Varnavides were out in front and a collision over a jump saw both bikes cart-wheeling, through the dust and carnage, Anthony Yewers hit the front with Luke Gaisford following closely in 2nd, the oldest and youngest Pro’s battled it out with Yewers holding off every challenge for the lead. With just over a lap to race and while passing back markers, Gaisford’s persistence paid off and he took the lead with one lap to run. Gaisford held on for his first Pro Race win, Yewers 2nd and Taylor Milling finishing his best Pro Race finish in 3rd.
Race 2 and McKay was a man possessed putting a lead on the field immediately and racing away to an easy 1st place while the minor placings Yewers in 2nd and Gaisford in 3rd
Race 3 Mckay again took the holeshot, the track had become extremely rough and lap speed was now not an issue, staying on and finishing was paramount, Mckay looked set for the win, until just over a lap to go misjudged a jump and came down hard, Yewers and Gaisford passed the fallen rider and put in an extra burst of speed over the last lap, Yewers holding on for the race and overall Round win, Gaisford in 2nd and Mckay finishing the race with a flat tyre held on for 3rd and 3rd for the Round.
