The Smarter than Smoking WA State Motocross Championship Finale was held yesterday at Lightweight Motorcycle Club.
Pro, Intermediate and Clubman Quads competed for round 6 points towards their overall series that has seen approximately 60 riders attend the different rounds. Quads had not competed at Byford for 3 years, so for most this was a brand new experience putting everyone in the same boat and no one racing on their home track.

The Pro Quad Championship and WA #1 plate went to Anthony Yewers who never finished outside of the top 4 placings all season, winning 5 races and 3 rounds to stand atop of the Podium.
Yewers previous WA #1 was won in 1990 and although having bagged many state podiums and a National #1 in 2007 his aim to better his WA #2 in '06 '08, just once before retiring from the Pro’s had now been achieved. Yewers applauded his felow riders Chad McKay, Ryan Lancaster and Chris Brenton for their tough competition over the last 4 years.
WA#2 for the Year went to youngster Luke Gaisford who at 18 is this years Pro Class youngest rider, a fact that wasn’t overlooked in presentations acknowledging that Luke hadn’t been born the first time Ant won a Championship back in 1990. Racing against childhood hero Glen Ashworth has been a highlite of the series for Luke, but learning much from Ant who he continually tussled with at almost every track has taught Luke a lot  about racing, through the pain, through illness, and even when the chips are down, just keep going.  Luke achieved 1 race win and will be back next year to compete again. Glen Ashworth took WA #3 for the series and is the only person to string together 3 WA Titles ‘01’02’03, a mixed season for Glen in 2009, but never the less was up the front more often than not, and is the holeshot king at most tracks. Glen is the silent achiever, always with a smile and if he gets away to a good start the whole field spend the rest of the race chasing him down. Glen Ashworth in his 10th year in Pro’s is one of the most recognised and respected riders on the track.
Chad McKay Aus #3  took the 4th place and after leading early in the championship, missed a few rounds in the series because of a training accident, putting him out of contention for the podium, but never the less certainly showed when racing he was one of the fastest riders around. Ryan Lancaster is Australia’s current #1 rider and took 5th position for this year, unfortunate injury and dnf’s kept him out of too many races to podium, but with Nationals just 3 weeks away, I’m sure Ryan’s is focused on defending his National Title.

The Intermediate Class saw Ross Varnavides learning his craft along with the Pro Racers on an ex Pro Racers Bike. Ross won 12 races and 2 rounds for the season, while second placed Rick Stephens having won 2 races and 2 rounds for the season was 29 points behind. Surprise package in round 6 was Michael Harcourt, who burst out of the start gates to get great starts and hold a good position throughout every race for the day, getting his first intermediate Race wins and winning the Round to advance into Third place for the overall. Daniel Udell slipped out of the top 3 with a troublesome day and Mike Allfrey’s season consistency, held him in the #5 spot for the season. The advancement of some talented Junior riders and top clubman riders in 2010, should see the Intermediate class on a grid of their own.

Quad Clubman for 2009 have seen 29 riders compete across the series, including new riders, advancing juniors, women and vets. The hardest job for competitors this year was trying to get themselves a place on the grid, with anyone dragging their feet with a late entry missing out. Some riders had entered rounds 5 & 6 in February on the off chance of getting a spot late in the season.

Kyle Brenton 1st , Mitchel Clarke 2nd  and Brad Filbey 3rd were the top 3 to watch in 2009, Brenton with 3 round wins and winning 6 races, caught everyones eye and what we noticed the most and more importantly at the end of the season, Kyle's was racing as fast in lap 4 as he did in lap 1. Kyle’s laptimes will do him really well in intermediates for next year, and with a solid season in seniors under his belt will definitely be one to watch come April 2010. Mitchel Clarke hails from Bunbury and has a huge future in front of him, his skill and speed has made him one of the most improved racers across the season, winning round 2 and taking 3 race wins. Mitchel is a flyer and his races with Kyle in round 6 had everyone on the edge of their seats.
Brad Filbey missed a round during the season due to injury, this saw his hopes of finishing on top diminish. Brad like Kyle and Mitchel will really take it to the intermediates in 2010 having won 2 rounds and 7 Races, Brad has ambitions and skills that will take him far. Brodie Puleo was a chance at a top 3 placing but some bad luck at round 6 saw him slip down into 4th place in front of Sam Derbyshire in 5th.
Each year we see many Clubman do a series and not return, and many advance to the Intermediates and beyond, Some riders just love to be out there racing and lapping up the atmosphere and Darryl Maringoni would fall into this category. Darryl would easily have done more than 10 years and seen the entire history of State Round unfold before him. It is people like this that have kept the sport alive when numbers where low and have got to enjoy the series when numbers have flourished. Congratulations Darryl for completing 10 seasons in a row !

If you want to Race state round 2010, be part of it, get into the organization and help, come along with your kids to the races, even if they are 18, it’s a family sport and at the end of it, its all good fun!
