Smarter than Smoking
WA State Motocross Championships
Round 5
Noble Falls
August 22nd
The finale of the State Championships for the Clubman Group A on Sunday saw youngster Marcus Smith make his debut into State Round racing, and was with confidence he took the first holeshot and left the field in his wake, unfortunately some bike problems took the shine off, with Smith pulling out of the race. Joel Mortimer took over the lead, stretching the margin to over 10 seconds from Luke Capogreco with his best finish for the season, Dave Harris put in a huge effort to finish in third, also his first time at the pointy end of the field.
Race 2 saw Smith again with a great start, The duo of Mortimer and Smith battling all over the track for supremacy with a drag race to the finish, Smith getting the nod with less than a second separating the pair, Barry Noy came through for 3rd.
Race 3 the home track favourite Barry Noy took the holeshot, and shot out to a nice lead with Smith and Mortimer on his heels. Mortimer set himself up for the pass on Smith leading into the last corner on lap 2, and with a huge drag race up the hill, Mortimer slid through to take 2nd in front of Smith, Mortimer set about to chase down Noy, but Noy is extremely fast at the Nobles circuit and wasnt about to be caught, taking the chequers to the applause of family and friends
Overall results for round 3
1st Joel Mortimer
2nd Dave Harris
3rd Michael Woodhead
Overall for the series
1st Joel Mortimer
2nd Barry Noy
3rd Patrick McNally
Quad Championship Class saw the usual list of factory riders, privateers, visitors from interstate, some blow-ins all out for some great competitive racing at the Noble Falls circuit. Although the track was prepped in anticipation for the biggest round of the year, a huge down pour the night before meant the track was heavy and slow, and a few laps of practice saw bikes bring about 20kg of wet clay in each to dump into the wash down bay.
Many demoralised riders sat cleaning their bikes leading up to race one, checking set-ups, changing tyres etc etc, the gate dropped and it was the holeshot king Glen Ashworth out in front with Ryan Lancaster close behind, followed by Adam Larson. Lancaster put the pass on Ashworth while Larson was then all over Ashworth and put the pass on across the loop, Ashworth then passed him back, meanwhile Gaisford had passed Mckay who then raced on with a flat tyre, Gaisford caught up to Larson and Ashworth with a 3way battle ensuing, Lancaster had checked out to over 25 second lead, while Gaisford passed Larson on the last lap and then up the hill to chequers, Ashworth held off the charge by a half bike length to keep second place, Gaisford third, Larson 4th all 3 riders less than a second separating them.
Race two saw a much sweeter track, again many changes to bikes as the now drying track would be slick and fast with speedway style corners.
Action a plenty as Lancaster hit the first corner and lost momentum with almost everyone passing him, Ashworth was out in front with Gaisford, Larson, Mckay and Higson in toe, Lancaster hit the 3rd corner at the bottom of the hill and rolled the bike damaging his thumb, Jordan Dummet rolled too behind him, the commentators were going off as Lancaster got up and run, yes run to first aid, his thumb pointing in all directions it shouldnt be, Gaisford passed Ashworth up the Hill to the water tower, Larson, then Higson then Mckay got passed. Higson passed Larson and looked to close the gap with Gaisford, the pair flying around the track for 2 laps hot on each other's wheels, the chequer flag and Gaisford claimed the win, Higson second with Larson third.
By now everyone was made aware that Lancaster was in first aid and all wasnt well, it was apparent a break or dislocation wasnt going to be fixed in time for race 3.
Race 3 Gaisford took the holeshot with Chad McKay in hot pursuit with barely a couple of bike lengths between them, Mckay took the bar jump downhill table top, the bike getting sideways on landing, flipped back for a tank slap then barrell rolled, spectacular crash which Chad Mckay to his credit got up from, mounted his bike and rode on. Gaisford got out to a good lead, while Larson held off the Higson charge for 3 laps until Higson made the pass to get up into second, while Larson settled for third til the chequers.
Luke Gaisford, first Championship round win, well done!
