2009 Round 5 of the Smarter than Smoking WAMX State Motocross Championships, was held at the Noble falls circuit on Sunday August 9th.
Round 5 marks a turning point in the series each season, and this year was to be no different. Previous to the days racing, we heard current WA #1 Chris Brenton, after having a major off at Toolleen Victoria, would miss the round, we all hope he heals quickly ! Chad Mckay was back from Injury, Higson, Stevens, Milling and Jefferies all pulled out, leaving a severely depleted Pro Class of only 6 riders. Never the less, racing was fierce and the day would see disappointments in mechanical DNF’s for 3 out of the 6 Pro’s. Ryan Lancaster showed great form, not having had great rounds at BSA in the past the monkey was certainly off his back, putting in fast lap times and showing great form all day.

2nd Anthony Yewers 56pts 2nd Luke Gaisford 276pts
3rd Coby Holland 49pts 3rd Glen Ashworth 241pts
Intermediate Quads whom race on the same grid as the pro’s where very exciting, while Ross Varnavides took 1st in race 1 and 3 different riders came across for places in each race. Rick Stephens has stepped up the pace, tacking onto the Pro riders, while Vanavides who had previously had 4 great rounds was certainly tested on the Hard pack BSA circuit, a sensational start line crash put Ross into second place for day, finishing the race to claim lucrative points for the series

Clubman Quads fielded a full grid, an over subscription of riders again wanting entry into this class.. Series leader Brad Filbey was out for the round and left Kyle Brenton, Mitchel Clarke, Brodie Puleo who have set themselves apart from the rest the crew, to race out the title without him. All was looking good for the first race, until the front runners collided over the downhill and came down hard with a traffic jam of broken bikes, and just riders unable to move anywhere getting the race red flagged. Watching from the bottom of the hill, it was a stampede of spectators running up the hill to see the carnage, “who says no one watches the quads” Fortunately bar a few small injuries it seems everyone is ok.
