JINDONG STATE ROUND 4
Round 4 of the Prestigious W.A. State Moto X was a split round over two days with the quads having every class on the Saturday along with the Women Solo’s. The senior solos were run on the Sunday. With over 130 entries for the Quad day, it is increasingly evident that Quad competitor numbers are on the rise in W.A.
With great support from clubs like Southern Capes, BSA and Southern Cross, Women Solos are to have three rounds to make up their State Series. This started at Southern Capes on Saturday and it was magnificent to see our largest field of 17 riders for a women’s event in W.A. This has given the women a fantastic opportunity to compete against women for a State Title.
The other big winner of the split round was the quad fraternity. A tremendous turn out saw the women’s quad class compete for their State Title over three races. Both the Junior classes had their 3rd round to finish off their State Titles. The previous two rounds being held at Tumbulgum and Manjimup. Vets 35 plus also had their State Title over three races. Clubman, Intermediates and the Championship Class of Pros were to compete in round 4 of 6 for the year.
With rain and winds hitting Perth and surrounding country regions for the past fortnight, it was little wonder everyone was skeptical in believing it would be any different than the mud pool of last years event. Luck would have it the weather bureau got it right. It was cold in the mornings and absolutely superb throughout the day.
Pros
Ant Yewers comes into round 4 as the Championship leader. Could this be Ant’s year as W.A.’s Pro Champion? Right on the heels of Yewers is youngster Luke Gaisford. With the likes of Chad McKay out with injury, Ryan Lancaster missing round 1 due to injury and wasn’t at his best at round 2. Chris Brenton has been winning all the moto x events he’s entered this year, but hasn’t been contending the State Series thus far. The fight for the No. 1 plate will go down to the wire, that’s one thing I’m sure of.
Round 4 see’s the return of Chris Brenton, Esperance youngster Josh Higson, Tom Stevens and Coby Holland. As well as these W.A. riders, Victorian young gun Mitch Van Vliet will be trying his skills against W.A.’s finest.
Moto 1
With his trademark start, Brenton on board his KTM 450 SX took the hole shot in front of Honda rider Glen Ashworth, fellow KTM team mate Ant Yewers and Josh Higson on his Suzuki LTR450. Lancaster (Yamaha) and Gaisford (Cam Am) were left wandering towards the rear. Higson made a mistake on his first lap and was passed by Tom Stevens (Honda) and Lancaster. Up front, Ashworth managed to stay with Brenton for a few laps but was showing signs of fatigue. Yewers wasn’t able to get the better of Ashworth and was comfortably sitting in 3rd. All the moves were being made in the middle of the pack with Lancaster working his way past Stevens by lap three. The only other mover was Higson, and on lap five, capitalized on an error and passed Lancaster. Brenton finished 1st after 10 laps with a well earned 2nd for Ashworth. Current points leader, Yewers gained some valuable points finishing 3rd, four places ahead of closest rival Gaisford.
Moto 2
Ashworth took the hole shot over Brenton and Lancaster. Mitch Van Vliet managed to come out in front of Yewers in fourth and another ordinary start by Gaisford. By the second corner, Brenton was leading the pack for this six lap sprint. Lancaster didn’t waste time getting into second and was putting pressure on Brenton. Both riders made a mistake but the positions remained unchanged to the finish. Yewers pushed hard and squeezed past Van Vliet and Ashworth to secure 3rd with Gaisford right on his tail. After a great start, fitness was playing a big part as Ashworth finished 5th and Van Vliet 6th.
Moto 3
Lancaster came out of the gates with gusto and headed Ashworth and Brenton over the start finish line. Higson was looking good in front of Kyle Lawrence (Suzuki) and Van Vliet. Luke Harrison (Honda) managed to be in front of both Yewers and Gaisford who were left behind in the leader wake. Lancaster was never in danger as he led from the front. Brenton easily slipped past Ashworth but wasn’t able to hatch it with Lancaster. Yewers and Gaisford were making up places after a terrible start while Ashworth was hanging onto 3rd. unfortunately Ashworth was moving the wrong way through the field and eventually pulled out due to mechanical problems. On the other hand, Gaisford had passed Yewers and moved into 3rd by lap 6. Higson couldn’t hold off Yewers and gave up 4th place in lap 7. By the end of lap 9, the positions hadn’t changed again. It was Lancaster by a good length over Brenton, and Gaisford rounding out the top three ahead of Yewers, Higson, Van Vliet and Harrison.
