2009 KTM WA Quad State Championships July 4th

Western Australian Motocross provided the Southwest town of Busselton a weekend of Motocross action, including the Quad State Championships, the Womens State Championships and also the WA State Motocross Championships, across the July 4th & 5th weekend.

Starting off with Saturday’s main event, the Pro Quads fielded Yamaha’s Aus #1 Ryan Lancaster, saw KTM’s Aus #2 Chris Brenton’s return to the WA State Championships, and while these two fought out the top position all day, with Glen Ashworth in tow, the youngsters RPS Can-Am’s Luke Gaisford, Suzuki’s Josh Higson and Victoria’s Can-Am X Team rider Mitch Van Vliet and current series leader KTM’s Anthony Yewers put on a spectacle of racing in every race pulling off hard fought passes, outjumping, out cornering each other and racing every one of the 10 lap journeys for the days best points.

Series so far  after round 4
1st Anthony Yewers 2nd Luke Gaisford 3rd Glen Ashworth

Intermediate Quads usually run within the Pro class and are scored separately, but this round with so many riders, the Intermediates were raced on a grid which not only included the series racers, but some overflow from Clubmans which got to race with some amazing riders. Ross Varnavides has shown all season he is an up and coming star, finishing top 5 outrights in the series so far, in many races, his domination of the Intermediate class and fast as Pro’s Laptimes will no doubt have him on the top line of the grading list.
Daniel Udell has stepped up the pace in 2009 and is a solid podium finisher at each event, while Michael Harcourt and Rick Stephens push for the 3rd step on the podium.

The 2009 KTM Women’s Quad State Championship was run on the 4th of July for a grid of 9 riders, 3 races would determine WA’s best for 2009. Jessica Osborne took a hat-trick of wins for a perfect 75 points and the crown of  2009 WA Women’s Quad State Champion. Jessica will compete in this years Quad Nationals to be held in Murray Bridge SA in September. Second place went to 16 year old Simone Gaisford competing in her first Women’s Quad State titles. Daneil Smith who had travelled from WA’s North West town of Newman to compete took 3rd place. The racing between all 9 girls was amazing, and with a new batch of ex- blaster riders into the class in the next few months should see the size of class pick up for 2010

The 2009 KTM Veterans Quads State Championship also was determined on July 4th with a grid of 11 riders, a popular class of riders as most entrants are fathers of riders in other classes.  Travelling from as far as Esperance to compete, previous National Vet Champion Scott Higson put in a huge day to finish 3rd, while Vince Thomson a current racer in the Intermediate series finished 2nd and another Previous Vet Champ Grant Gaisford finished 1st

Clubman Quads again attracted a full grid of racers, with some riders taking the option to compete in the intermediate class to get a ride in.
The Clubman Quad class has become the hottest ticket in town with a waiting list that would half fill another grid, it is great to see so much young talent excelling in this class with high ambitions of riders wanting to advance to intermediates and beyond.
Brad Filbey 1st for Round 4 and leader for the series, only managed to extend his lead by a point over the day with 1st 1st 3rd, while Kyle Brenton’s has risen to another level with 2nd 2nd 1st , Bunbury’s Mitchel Clarke held off all challenges to podium in 3rd for the day. Brodie Puleo snuck in for a 3rd place in race 3 while young Luke Capogreco showed some great form at Southern Capes. Round 5 is always where the series kicks into top gear and everyone will need to be 100% ready to race, to stay in touch with the leaders.

The penultimate Junior Quad class is the 200cc - 300cc commonly known in WA as the Blaster Class. Twenty nine Juniors competed in this class across the series and with 10 riders advancing to seniors in the next few months, it looks like our healthy grid of Juniors will still fill the grid. To see twenty blasters take off in practice still gives me goose-bumps as these very talented young riders put in laptimes that rival many seniors. Marcus Smith has been the stand out performer in 2009 and is the Number one Plate holder for WA for 2009 and is the first person to go on the Junior honour board more than twice, with another season in Juniors to come, he will be a veteran to racing before he reaches the senior ranks. Congratulations Marcus for a great season. Adam Davies came in second and is one of the best Junior riders WA has ever seen, Adam has advanced through the ranks from 50cc quads, and has always been scary fast, his advancement to seniors will surely come with much anticipation from all his family & fans. Jordan Dummett is WA #3 and has excelled in 2009 maintaining podium positions were ever he races, his positive attitude and big smile just shows everyone how much he loves his racing, and this year it has put him on the podium. Watch out Clubman as all these Juniors come through to the senior ranks, Clubmans in 2010 will be amazing without a doubt !

Junior 90cc- 110cc has an amazing little veteran rider in the name of Christopher Bosnakis, he has been racing quads since he was 3 years old, and currently is Aus #1, his skill is unsurpassed by any Junior in the country. Putting in laptimes at Jindong that you just have to check out to believe, he puts that Cobra through it paces and loves every minute of it.
Riding the Honda 90cc and finishing in 2nd place for 2009 is Maverick Cuthbert, developing into a confident fast and skilled rider, Maverick performed consistently across all three rounds and held a 32 point buffer, in front of third placegetter Aston Oliver, onboard the Cobra, Aston battled it out with Maverick through every race, Aston must be close to 6ft and I’m sure he cant wait to move into the 200-300cc class.

Junior 90cc - 110cc 7yrs - U9yrs saw only 2 entrants compete this year, but mixing on the same grid with their older counterparts certainly showed just how talented young Kyle Yewers(1st) and Zac Ognenis(2nd) are, anyone sticking around for presentations were certainly entertained also off the track with the youngsters fun antics.

The Junior Quad State Championship Series of three rounds, was applauded by most, but stressful for others, with big expectations for 2010 we hope the series moves forward, onwards and upwards as a whole generation of Juniors starting in 90cc have moved through to Seniors. Forty one Juniors competed across the series and it was great to see a full Quad State Championship as their finale and for everyone to stay around for presentations and acknowledge our wonderful Junior Riders.

A Huge thankyou to KTM, Berry Sweet Strawberry Farms and Automasters Fremantle
