Smarter than Smoking WA State Motocross Championships
Round 1
First of all, have to mention some great people, Kim & Steve from Stanford Cabinets, how many people would allow you to use their quad for pre season? Just amazingly generous and without them not sure what riding condition I would be in ! My Dad for putting his engine in my bike so I could race, and Dave Hawley who got his shocks from Fox before me, and let me use them to race with. The Motocross community are such a good group of people!
My sponsors listed below, thanks you've helped make my 2010 racing season that bit more affordable, still in my mechanical apprenticeship so every bit helps heaps !
Event Report Round 1
Coastal Park, my home circuit, I've been racing here since I was about 10 yrs old, the track being sand is relatively different each and every time its prepped, sometimes you can barely clear jumps, and sometimes you flat land them, but overall Coastal is alot about the starts and alot about cornering. This season we started with 15 in the Championship class and my aim was to win on my home track, few setbacks with missing components did'nt put me off, I'd been running a stock Suzuki for 6 weeks with no aftermarket gear on it and I was hoping my new ride would deliver some comfort and ease of handling. I've been focussed on my training and was pretty pumped to get out there and see if everyone else had been training hard too, seems most of the Pro's paths had'nt crossed since the nationals in Sept 09 so I guessed they all felt the same.
Race 1
Got a pretty good start, 3rd up the bridge behind Ryan Lancaster and Glen Ashworth, Glen held the lead for 4 laps, then Ryan passed him, I passed him also with one lap to go, while Chad Mckay was making his way up to the front, was holding second to the last jump, Mckay got infront and had to settle for 3rd across the finish line with just 3 seconds separating all 3 of of us.
Race 2
Didnt get a good start here and had to battle my way through the field to get up the front and chase down and pass Glen, I could still see Lancaster and soon caught up, with Mckay just in front of him, the three of us put in some really close and hard racing, and again went across the finish line with just 3 seconds separating us, there was over a minute before 4th place came across the line.
Race 3
As I said before, I've raced at Coastal a long time and no amount of training can prepare you for the pain of thumb and arm pump suffered in state round racing in sand when the track is at its ultimate worst. I got a pretty good start, with Lancaster in front of me, but over on roadside he nosed it into a hole and I took the lead, held on for a couple of laps and although doing my best to hold up the pace the thumb pump became survival. Lancaster passed and so did McKay, wasnt happy, but still 60 points for the day on a bike I assembled 2 days previously and had never raced or even ridden at Coastal on was a good result.
