Luke Gaisford
BSA Cup 09
July 11

The BSA Cup was a family outing for the Gaisford's with Luke and Grant riding in the Quads and Simone racing in the Women's Solo Championships round 2.

Luke was there to see the new layout of the Noble Falls circuit and get some much needed track time on the surface that many riders use for weekly practice. Luke travels to Nobles about once or twice a year and the hard pack surface is much different to his home track, which is 50 metres from the beach.

BSA Cup consists of 3 races each of 5 laps, effectively being a sprint race where no mistakes can be made.
Race 1 After a not so good start Luke got into 5th by the end of the first lap, 4th after the second, passing both Glen Ashworth and Tom Stevens to get into second place for the chequers. Grant coming through for 8th.
Race 2 saw Brenton out to a big lead, Luke pushing himself a bit hard coming off the side of a jump a bit skew wif, but sorting himself out to hold onto third position. Grant got a better run holding onto 5th.

Race 3 was a short one for Grant, rode to the start line, and the trusty Honda would'nt budge any further.
Luke got a brilliant start following Brenton around the first corner, he was hot on his back wheels, His speed was phenomenal but in the new section of the track which had been testing the riders skill all day, it all came unstuck with Luke having a pretty major off, that was the end of his race day and left him looking at a 7 week recovery with a grade 3 tear to his calf muscle.

August 2nd 2009
Lukes fitness was to be tested here as his leg was still not healed, but with state round next weekend
we needed to assess his fitness and whether his leg would take the racing on the demanding hard pack terrain.
Race 1 lasted all of "to the first corner" when a pile up sore Luke left in the middle of the bunch suffering a hole to his pipe, he continued to race more so to check himself out and get much needed hard pack track time.
Race 2 saw him get a great start, but with a patch job on his pipe and packing blocking things up, he pulled over and let the field pass, the packing blew all over the track and Luke took off to finish the race.
Race 3 Was going to be pure practice, and we crossed our fingers to make sure they would even let Luke on the grid with what now was a gaping tear in his pipe. Racing the 4 lap race and concentrating on good form Luke crossed the finish line in third. Overall his event result was 4th while his Dad Grant followed him across the finish line in race 3 in 4th, with 6th overall for the day.

State Round 5 2009

State Round 5 was Lukes 18th Birthday, but was not a good race day, Luke suffered his first ever state round DNF in the first race, 35 state round races in a row since he was 16 without a dnf,so it was to Luke's credit that after trying to organise a Can-Am through the X team, only to find that bike wasnt rideable either, he pulled himself together, and went out in race two on the RPS Honda to pass Anthony Yewers and take 2nd place behind Ryan Lancaster. Lancaster is Aus #1 currently the fastest rider in the country and at BSA he certainly showed he is ready to take on Australia's best in just over a months time. Luke getting second to Ryan bumped up his enthusiasm and confidence and he again went out in Race 3 to do his best and hold onto his slim point margin for overall 2nd place in the WA Championship. Glen Ashworth sitting in third capitalised on Luke's misfortune in the 1st race catching up 22 points, but also suffering a dnf in the 2nd gave Luke back a small buffer.
Race 3 was the most enthralling of the day and reminiscent of BSA state round in 08, Gaisford and Yewers head to head all over the track, Gaisford attempting passes, Yewers denying, two great riders, clean passes, side by side around all corners, clean maneuvers all over the track with a drag race for the finish line which saw the Yewers KTM outpower Gaisford's Honda by .150 of a second. So close over the finish we had to wait  for transponder results to confirm places.
