2010 Yamaha Australian Quad Nationals
The wait was over for competitors, it was 12 months since the 2009 Championship in South Australia.  This spring the Quad Nationals rolled into Southern Capes Motorcycle Club's Jindong Park Circuit just outside of Busselton in the South West of WA.

As if on cue, the weather gods turned on three days of delightful weather, and the riders in turn put on two days of the best four wheeled quad racing I have witnessed.  Juniors and Seniors were well represented in the support classes as the pits were alive with amassed colours from riders and teams from as far afield as New Zealand and the UK, Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland, NSW and Victoria, with local Western Australian riders from our states far north making the journey southwards to the Quad Nationals.

The track was prepared in immaculate fashion, representing a highway and Saturday morning the thundering motors from the quads echoed throughout the area.  Saturday morning allowed for practice with two rounds of racing.  Inter Opens saw brilliant racing from Adam Larsen, Adam Davies, Mitchel Clarke and Brad Filbey, Jye Schapp swapped two wheels for a quad and had a blast.  The junior quads were dominated by Chris Bosnakis with great rides from Aston Oliver, James Ognenis and Chelsea Marley-Duncan with other junior classes supported by Aidan Robinson, Cain Gerrits, Jack Baldock and Jack Gaske.

Josh McKay,Anthony Pearce, Donovan Peterson and Ben Wade certainly put on a show in the Junior 200cc/300cc class whilst the ladies of the competition  shown with  two girls classes Jemma Merrylees, Melissa Davies and Caitlin Piesse in fine form in the juniors whilst the senior ladies racing was dominated by Teniel Morgan, Bernice Ackerman and Brooke McKay.  Clubman Opens was a precursor of what was to come with top racing all weekend from riders such as Travis Brown, Sam Derbyshire, Brayden Spencer and of course, Marcus Smith.

The vets ran two classes the 35-44 year old class saw Barry Noy take out the win with competition fast and furious from Matt McKay, Brian Williams and Vaughn Adams from New Zealand, the Vets 45 years and over was dominated by Len Pipiciello, Grant Gaisford, Scott Higson and Dereck Griffiths.  The MX Weekly/Perth MX Team saw riders Craig Stanborough and Jeff Howell pick up 9th and 10th overall.

The Pro Open was fast and furious all weekend, with both Chad McKay and Chris Brenton both announcing this would be their final race in 2010, as the both take a well-deserved break from the sport, the UK riders of Paul Holmes and Mark Watson took full advantage, with Ryan Lancaster snapping at their heals, Luke Gaisford, Jordan Dummett and Blake Waldman were all within grasp however it would come down to the final lap of the final moto.

Chris Brenton the defending champ had the win in sights when tragedy struck, and mechanical failure saw him and the crowd willing the rider to push the bike over the line, however the rules state that the rider must be on their bike and ride over the finish line.  The new Australian Champion, Ryan Lancaster, Luke Gaisford runner up with Paul Holmes third.

It was a dramatic conclusion to a sensational weekend, overcome with emotion, Lancaster collapsed into the arms of his supporters, sponsors and fans, through tears of joy Ryan Lancaster said, " I can't believe it, I know how Chris feels, I've been there, hats off to him but I have had a crappy season and I deserve this win for my friends, family and my sponsors this is for them".

Chris Brenton was philosophical about the result and gracious in defeat, "Look I almost had the #1 plate but the battery fell out on the 2nd last corner and you don't get points for pushing your bike over the line. Congrats to Ryan for a consistent weekend. That's all from me; I gave it my best shot. No excuses. I'm taking a break from the sport there's other things I want to do in my life and I  just want to say a massive thanks to my team, KTM, all the sponsors, my mum, dad, sister and my beautiful girlfriend".
